The Centre for Tropical and Infectious Diseases (CTID) is a new facility providing 7,000m² of laboratory, write-up and office space, set over four floors, bringing back a significant area of brownfield land into productive use.
The design features a complex configuration of laboratories in glass boxes, as well as internal glass walls, enabling daylight to penetrate to the core of the building. Horizontal slot glazing and external aluminium fins give the building a strong horizontal emphasis which disguises the
large heights required for a scientific building.
The Centre was given a contemporary design, with the laboratories
buried in the middle, and write-up spaces and offices around the perimeter. The circulation around the building is in ‘racetrack’ form, increasing the links
