Set over eight floors, the 256 “intelligent living spaces” of Abito Salford were designed by BDP as compact flats built around a central pod housing wardrobe, kitchen, bathroom and storage space – with a full size pull down bed.
The instant success of Abito at Greengate led to the development of a second Abito at Salford Quays, following a thorough Research and Development programme which involved the use of a full sized prototype apartment, giving BDP the ability to construct a building from the inside out.
Elimination of dead space was a priority as BDP designer Jasper Sanders explained: “We looked at several examples of concept living, taking inspiration from the way the Japanese have successfully utilised smaller spaces through innovation.
“Abito stands out for putting people at the heart of the design. Everything has been super-condensed and by removing the need for corridors, we’ve been able to put that space back into the living area”.
