The new Transport Interchange for Nelson is located adjacent to the town centre and replaces the existing antiquated bus stationlocated nearby and provides a physical link between the public transport facilities of bus and rail and the town centre. The existing train station is located behind the new structure at a higher level and a DDA compliant access is provided.
Lancashire County Council commissioned SBS Architects as lead consultants to deliver the project from initial feasibility studies to completion. The close partnership between lancashire County Council and and Pendle Borough Council who donated the land and the Pendle Partnership who donated £1m to the project.
The scheme consists of a fully glazed concourse with a feature stack bonded facing block wall to the rear. With access to 10 bus stands serving the local and regional area, provision has also been provided for coach arrival and departure. Designated seating areas lie adjacent to the bus stands with direct access behind new automatic doors. Off the concourse a designated ticket information centre is provided giving access to full travel requirements for the public. Public toilets and full staff accommodation are also provided within the new Interchange.
