The concept for the fit out of Walker House represented a step change for the MoD in terms of their working environment, and facilitated a change in the culture of their organisation, both perceived and actual. The client’s detailed brief resulted in the creation of a flexible and non hierarchical space, which embraces informal staff break-out areas, informal meeting points and a completely open plan workspace for 600 staff.
The fit out space comprises a dedicated reception area, office support facilities, training suite and a considerable IT data centre to serve the organisation on a global scale.
A design concept of Air, Land and Sea was devised to enrich the interior experience, allowing for branding and way-finding opportunities to integrate with the architectural forms. This concept manifested itself into a bold and graphical scheme with a simple palette of materials, providing a bright and functional design that responded to the future business requirements and aspirations of the MoD.
Our constraints within the building envelope were numerous and included:
• A pre war structure which had been vacant for 25 years
• Differing ceiling and slab level changes
• Lift and welfare standards to be upgraded to current standards
“HKR have brought to life and delivered above and beyond the original concept design. The MoD demise is an exceptionally striking, innovative but functional interior. The excellent fit out, will establish strong foundations and act as a lasting legacy to deliver and enhance future ways of working”.
