The Church and Friary of St. Francis was designed by the acclaimed Victorian architect, Edward Pugin, for the Franciscan Order and is listed by the World Monuments Fund as one of the Hundred Most Endangered Monuments in the World. The building is Grade II* listed, which puts it among the top 6% of all listed buildings and forms a strategic element of the redevelopment of East Manchester.

Austin-Smith:Lord worked with the Trust to articulate the new and old, creating new uses for a building of international significance in addition to developing a number of community uses within the wider site in order to create viable opportunities for the re-development of the area. An application to the Heritage Lottery Fund was successful and the project completed in 2007.
